The Pembina Hall Residence is a 10 storey high structure encompassing 360 resident rooms at the University of Manitoba. Since the residence needed to be constructed over the existing Pembina Hall dining facility, the block of resident rooms was lifted approximately 4 storeys, clear spanning 50 metres to two 14 storey high towers. This created a significant number of complexities in design and construction that were successfully dealt with.
Challenges included designing and installing foundations in amongst the existing building and coordinating the differential cambers of each floor as they were constructed.
The result is a showpiece that has created a sense of fulfillment and pride among students, staff, and university administration.
