University College of the North: Thompson

Project Journey

Completed in 2014, the Thompson Manitoba campus of the University College of the North provides a centre of excellence for post-secondary education in northern Manitoba. Programs in nursing, business, and trades are held for approximately 600 students. The two-storey high open connection to the Thompson Regional Community Centre allows for shared amenities.

The building includes a full-height atrium with pedestrian bridges, a free-standing staircase, and skylights for natural lighting, a green roof area creating a park-like setting above the daycare wing, and a tiered lecture theatre with sloped soffit above the main entrance.

The use of steel piles, structural steel framing, and precast hollow core panels, allowed for shorter site construction times.

Crosier Kilgour as structural engineer-of-record provided the structural design packages in phases to facilitate a fast-track approach to the construction of the building.
